on my most recent trip to haiti i lost my passport.
correction: i left my passport in the seat back pocket on my trip home from port au prince to miami and when i alerted american airlines to this fact (in a completely calm, cool and collected manner, i assure you), they said they couldn’t find it.
resulting in me feeling like the world’s biggest idiot, not getting to say goodbye to anyone in my group (because they all went through customs like normal people who were holding their passports in their hands and not sobbing at a “help” desk), spending three hours in a holding cell at border proatrol with every other cuban trying to squeeze into america via the miami airport and finally being released to catch my flight back home to chicago. it was one of the most anxious and humbling experiences of my life.
but once i knew i was going to be able to stay in america and not live like tom hanks in that movie where he lives in the airport because his country stops existing or something, the most upsetting aspect of this experience was that i’d lost my passport. lost it.lost all of my stamps from different adventures—studying abroad, living in ireland, a spur of the moment trip to iceland, all four haitian stamps that changed my life—and i was pretty broken hearted.
today i got a call from american airlines and in what can only be described as a birthday miracle, they found my passport and are returning it to me!!
i still have to get a new one because this guy was declared lost by homeland security, but i can still have my 19 year old picture, a girl full of dreams and blonde hair dye, my stamps and a tangible reminder of my adventures.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!
